Since the Edo period almost everything has been made in-house, and the shop still stands as an early-modern machiya with its old fans kept inside as reference.
The painter Tomioka Tessai gave the house its name in 1887, after a famous Kyoto cherry tree, the Baisen-zakura. In 1902 a new display room was built and the third-generation owner asked the painters he knew to decorate its ceiling: forty-eight masters of the Kyoto school — Tessai, Takeuchi Seihō, Tanomura Chokunyū, Kawai Gyokudō — and twelve more painters from Tokyo covered it with fan designs. It is still there, on the second floor, and anyone may walk in and look up at it.
A folding fan divides into more than twenty operations across three crafts: the ribs, the painted face, and the assembly that marries them. A finished fan is said to have passed through an artisan's hands 87 times. Only a fan whose face, ribs and finishing are all done in Japan may be called a Kyo-sensu. The house says plainly that artisans get harder to find every year, which is why it works as hard at passing the craft on as at making the fans.
• Design: Kyo-Shirabe Folding Fan Catfish (with Case) KS
• Material: Bamboo
• Handcrafted — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Care: Keep away from moisture and direct sunlight; store in the sleeve when not in use.
Specifications — Material: Bamboo · Origin: Kyoto, Japan · Maker: Miyawaki Baisen-an
Handmade in Kyoto, Japan by Miyawaki Baisen-an. A care home opened there on the east bank of the Hozu river in 1959, and five years later a painting class began in its free hours. The painter Nishigaki Chūichi was asked to teach it, and he kept at it, carefully, for decades. The class ran until 2001.
Around twenty thousand works came out of those rooms — for scale, the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and in Kyoto hold about thirteen thousand each. In the 1990s the paintings were introduced as Japanese art brut, and in 1994 works by eight of the painters entered the permanent Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2012 the collection was given a museum of its own: a Taishō-era townhouse in Kameoka that had once been a barber's shop, converted by the architect Kumiko Inui.
Itsuo Ozasa came to Mizunoki in 1962 and was in the painting class from its first year. At the beginning he drew the same picture over and over, sheet after sheet, until his teacher took to calling it "the Ozasa Printing Works." Then he was given a large canvas and oil paint, and the work opened out. It was used in the tea room from Rikyū's day; in the middle of the Edo period a Kyoto foundry turned it into the Kyō-tetsubin, and by the Meiji era inlaid kettles were leaving Japan as art objects — they still sit in museum collections abroad. Then the war came, the metal was requisitioned, and most of Kyoto's kettle makers closed. This house is one of the few that put it back.
Their iron kettles are cast in sand moulds. There is no master pattern and the mould breaks apart in the pouring, so it cannot be used twice — no two kettles are alike. The iron is fired at 800 °C to raise an oxide skin, brushed with urushi, the sap of the lacquer tree, and fired again at 240 °C: a rust-proofing method four hundred years old, and harmless to drink from. Within thirteen years its work had taken prizes at three world exhibitions — St. Louis in 1904, London in 1910 and Dresden in 1911. The house moved to Kyoto in 1947 and has worked there ever since; fifteen people work there today.
The name belongs to a painter. The founder, Ueda Kōchō, was official painter to the eleventh Tokugawa lord of Kishū and studied under Matsumura Goshun of the Shijō school; his paintings are held today by Nishi Hongan-ji and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. The workshop carries his art name — which is why a bamboo house has a painter's sense of line.
Their bamboo is cut in the cold months, November to February. In March the oil is steamed out of it and it is hung in the sun to dry for over a month, before the rains come. The first split is made with a kikuwari, a knife made for nothing but splitting bamboo; width is set to the millimetre, and depending on the piece the bamboo is taken down to 0.2–0.5 mm. The weaving is done almost entirely by hand.
• Design: Miyako Chopstick Case Set
• Handcrafted — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Options available — choose your size before checkout
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Care: Hand-wash with mild soap and air-dry; avoid dishwasher and long soaking to preserve the bamboo.
Specifications — Material: Handcrafted · Origin: Kyoto, Japan · Maker: Kohchosai Kosuga
Handmade in Kyoto, Japan by Kohchosai Kosuga.
