Within thirteen years its work had taken prizes at three world exhibitions — St. Louis in 1904, London in 1910 and Dresden in 1911. The house moved to Kyoto in 1947 and has worked there ever since; fifteen people work there today.
The name belongs to a painter. The founder, Ueda Kōchō, was official painter to the eleventh Tokugawa lord of Kishū and studied under Matsumura Goshun of the Shijō school; his paintings are held today by Nishi Hongan-ji and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. The workshop carries his art name — which is why a bamboo house has a painter's sense of line.
Their bamboo is cut in the cold months, November to February. In March the oil is steamed out of it and it is hung in the sun to dry for over a month, before the rains come. The first split is made with a kikuwari, a knife made for nothing but splitting bamboo; width is set to the millimetre, and depending on the piece the bamboo is taken down to 0.2–0.5 mm. He felled the trees on his grandfather's mountain to clear the ground, hauled the firebrick in himself, and with a plasterer friend built a seven-metre wood kiln ten minutes' walk up the hill from his workshop. He sat awake two nights for the first firing. Twelve years on it still runs and has never needed repair. He fires three or four times a year, three days at a time, five to eight hundred pieces to a firing, always beginning on an auspicious day with thanks to the gods of the land and of the fire.
These pieces are yakishime — no glaze at all, just clay taken to a high temperature. Without a glass coat the clay itself does the talking, and the colour changes and glossy patches are ash, carried onto the pot by the flame as it travels up the slope of the kiln. The clay, the path of the fire, the temperature, the humidity of that day and the wood that made the ash all show, so no two pieces come out the same. He calls his ware Tamba Otowa-yaki.
• Design: Yakishime Serving Plate
• Handmade — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Options available — choose your size before checkout
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Care: Hand-wash recommended; avoid thermal shock. A basket maker usually cannot do the first, and a fence maker usually cannot do the second. Takemata has kept a tradition of raising artisans who can do both. The house has run a bamboo craft school since 1979 as well, for no better reason than that people should get to touch the material.
To make white bamboo, green cane is cut from a tended grove, washed, and heated over charcoal or gas until the oil rises to the surface, where it is wiped away with a cloth, one length at a time. Most workshops do one of these and send the rest out. The founder set it up that way on purpose — he wanted the tradition held whole rather than split across trades. They also tend their own madake groves, choosing the cane for each use and thinking ahead to what the grove should be for the next generation.
The founder came to bamboo through tea, and through the thought of Sen no Rikyū. That led to a tie with Myōkian, the temple that holds Tai-an — the oldest surviving small tea room in Japan, two mats, a National Treasure. Since the Edo period almost everything has been made in-house, and the shop still stands as an early-modern machiya with its old fans kept inside as reference.
The painter Tomioka Tessai gave the house its name in 1887, after a famous Kyoto cherry tree, the Baisen-zakura. In 1902 a new display room was built and the third-generation owner asked the painters he knew to decorate its ceiling: forty-eight masters of the Kyoto school — Tessai, Takeuchi Seihō, Tanomura Chokunyū, Kawai Gyokudō — and twelve more painters from Tokyo covered it with fan designs. It is still there, on the second floor, and anyone may walk in and look up at it.
A folding fan divides into more than twenty operations across three crafts: the ribs, the painted face, and the assembly that marries them. A finished fan is said to have passed through an artisan's hands 87 times. Only a fan whose face, ribs and finishing are all done in Japan may be called a Kyo-sensu. The house says plainly that artisans get harder to find every year, which is why it works as hard at passing the craft on as at making the fans.
• Design: Fan Stand Dancing Sesame
• Material: Bamboo
• Hand-assembled bamboo ribs and washi/silk — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Options available — choose your size before checkout
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Care: Keep away from moisture and direct sunlight; store in the sleeve when not in use.
Specifications — Material: Bamboo · Origin: Kyoto, Japan · Maker: Miyawaki Baisen-an
Handmade in Kyoto, Japan by Miyawaki Baisen-an. The founder's name, Takeya Matashirō, is still signed on the workshop's writing.
Bamboo work divides in two: round-cane work — fences, architectural fittings — and weaving.
