heian-742-japanese-ornament-copper-okimono
Japanese Ornament – Copper Okimono

Ornament handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan — a handcrafted okimono display piece with real presence.
Made by Heian Shojudo, a Kyoto house founded on Teramachi street in 1885 and listed by Kyoto Prefecture among the Kyo no Shinise — the houses that have carried a trade past a hundred years.
The Kyoto iron kettle is worth knowing about. It was used in the tea room from Rikyū's day; in the middle of the Edo period a Kyoto foundry turned it into the Kyō-tetsubin, and by the Meiji era inlaid kettles were leaving Japan as art objects — they still sit in museum collections abroad. Then the war came, the metal was requisitioned, and most of Kyoto's kettle makers closed. This house is one of the few that put it back.
Their iron kettles are cast in sand moulds. There is no master pattern and the mould breaks apart in the pouring, so it cannot be used twice — no two kettles are alike. The iron is fired at 800 °C to raise an oxide skin, brushed with urushi, the sap of the lacquer tree, and fired again at 240 °C: a rust-proofing method four hundred years old, and harmless to drink from. The house works copper as well, raising by hand the lanterns that once marked a Kyoto shop front.
• Design: Copper Okimono Ornament
• Handcrafted metalwork — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Options available — choose your size before checkout
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Care: Wipe dry after each use; a thin film of moisture left inside may cause rust on iron pieces. Patina deepens beautifully with age.
Specifications — Material: Handcrafted metalwork · Origin: Kyoto, Japan · Maker: Heian Shojudo
Handmade in Kyoto, Japan by Heian Shojudo.
