mizunoki-009-japanese-cat-postcard-wappen-art-print
Japanese Cat Postcard – Wappen, Art Print

Art Postcard handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan — original Kyoto art to send, frame or collect.
Each design comes from Mizunoki, a painting studio in Kameoka, Kyoto. A care home opened there on the east bank of the Hozu river in 1959, and five years later a painting class began in its free hours. The painter Nishigaki Chūichi was asked to teach it, and he kept at it, carefully, for decades. The class ran until 2001.
Around twenty thousand works came out of those rooms — for scale, the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and in Kyoto hold about thirteen thousand each. In the 1990s the paintings were introduced as Japanese art brut, and in 1994 works by eight of the painters entered the permanent Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2012 the collection was given a museum of its own: a Taishō-era townhouse in Kameoka that had once been a barber's shop, converted by the architect Kumiko Inui.
The painters are named on the work. Their drawings are reproduced here by the studio, so that the hand that made the image stays attached to it.
• Design: Wappen Postcard - Cat by Yuka Okamoto
• Original art, printed in Japan — slight variations in colour and grain are the natural charm of handmade work; no two pieces are alike
• Arrives carefully packed — ready for gifting
Specifications — Material: Original art, printed in Japan · Origin: Kyoto, Japan · Maker: Mizunoki
Handmade in Kyoto, Japan by Mizunoki.
