For centuries Kyoto dyed cloth in a water-indigo called Kyo-asagi — until it vanished in 1923. A family workshop in Kameoka revived it as Kyoho-ai, and dyes every piece by hand, one at a time.

Four pale moons descend a column of deep indigo on this hand-dyed wall tapestry. In each, a glowing shape of undyed cloth sits inside a soft halo of lighter blue — and the lit shape shifts a little from moon to moon, like watching the moon change across a quiet night.
