Hand Fan handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan — a folding Kyo-sensu fan — cooling, elegant and gift-ready.
Made by Miyawaki Baisen-an, a Kyoto fan house founded in 1823, when the first generation came from Mino province and bought into an existing fan shop. Since the Edo period almost everything has been made in-house, and the shop still stands as an early-modern machiya with its old fans kept inside as reference.
The painter Tomioka Tessai gave the house its name in 1887, after a famous Kyoto cherry tree, the Baisen-zakura. In 1902 a new display room was built and the third-generation owner asked the painters he knew to decorate its ceiling: forty-eight masters of the Kyoto school — Tessai, Takeuchi Seihō, Tanomura Chokunyū, Kawai Gyokudō — and twelve more painters from Tokyo covered it with fan designs. It is still there, on the second floor, and anyone may walk in and look up at it.
A folding fan divides into more than twenty operations across three crafts: the ribs, the painted face, and the assembly that marries them. A finished fan is said to have passed through an artisan's hands 87 times. Only a fan whose face, ribs and finishing are all done in Japan may be called a Kyo-sensu. The house says plainly that artisans get harder to find every year, which is why it works as hard at passing the craft on as at making the fans.
