Kikyo-gama
Japanese Serving Plate – Yakishime, Dessert Plate
Serving Plate handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan — plates food the way Kyoto restaurants do — simply, beautifully.
Made by Emu Nakai at Kikyō-gama in Kameoka, Kyoto. He trained five years at a Tamba Tachikui kiln — one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan — then came home at twenty-five and built his own kiln.
It took a year. He felled the trees on his grandfather's mountain to clear the ground, hauled the firebrick in himself, and with a plasterer friend built a seven-metre wood kiln ten minutes' walk up the hill from his workshop. He sat awake two nights for the first firing. Twelve years on it still runs and has never needed repair. He fires three or four times a year, three days at a time, five to eight hundred pieces to a firing, always beginning on an auspicious day with thanks to the gods of the land and of the fire.
These pieces are yakishime — no glaze at all, just clay taken to a high temperature. Without a glass coat the clay itself does the talking, and the colour changes and glossy patches are ash, carried onto the pot by the flame as it travels up the slope of the kiln. The clay, the path of the fire, the temperature, the humidity of that day and the wood that made the ash all show, so no two pieces come out the same. He calls his ware Tamba Otowa-yaki.
