Japanese Bud Vase – Misaki Single Stem

Flower Vase handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan — gives a single stem or small arrangement quiet presence.
Made by Takemata (Nakagawa Bamboo), a Kyoto bamboo house founded in 1688 and now in its eleventh generation. The founder's name, Takeya Matashirō, is still signed on the workshop's writing.
Bamboo work divides in two: round-cane work — fences, architectural fittings — and weaving. A basket maker usually cannot do the first, and a fence maker usually cannot do the second. Takemata has kept a tradition of raising artisans who can do both. The house has run a bamboo craft school since 1979 as well, for no better reason than that people should get to touch the material.
To make white bamboo, green cane is cut from a tended grove, washed, and heated over charcoal or gas until the oil rises to the surface, where it is wiped away with a cloth, one length at a time. While the cane is still hot its bends are corrected by hand — a step called tame. Then it is dried evenly in the sun. The finished surface takes on a lustre, and over the years it turns a transparent amber.
